Kangaroo Vs The Car

Howdy Everybuddy, our sissy had an accident.  She was driving home from work about 8.00 pm, it was dark, and she hit a kangaroo.  Where we live, this is always a possibility and Dad has had many close calls with 'Roos.  They are totally unaware of the danger they are in (and can cause) and Dad has even had them hop straight down the middle of the road when trying to 'escape' from his car.

They are fast, can hop from one side of the road to the other with amazing speed but at the same time, can also jump in front of your car without warning.  The worse time is early morning and dusk when they are on the move.

Thank goodness our sissy was unhurt.  The Roo was killed, sadly, but when hit at 100 km an hour, and weighing approx 70-80 kgs (154 -176 lbs), there is not much chance of surviving.

Our Sissy was extremely shaken and shocked.  It happened so fast she had no time to do anything but brake.  She had no time to swerve but as this usually causes loss of control and with all the huge Gum trees along our roads, it could have made a much worse scenario.

Result, one bonnet needed replacing, one front bumper replaced, new radiator and front lights.

We are so sorry for the Roo, but so thankful our Sissy is ok.  Mum had a little melt down after the event!  So on this weekend, and to our friends across the pond enjoying a long weekend, we say, stay safe on the roads, and if you see a Roo, ask him what the heck he's doing O/S!!

This is my Sissy who lets me sleep on her lap, on the chair!
Love ya Laura.
(No, come off it mates, this is an old photo,
we haven't got our tree up yet!)

Take care all.  No worries, and love, Stella and Rory

  1. Ouch. Glad your Sissy is okay. What happened to the roo? Did you have to report it? The only time that ever happened to me was more than 30 years ago. I was in a bus that hit a roo in the middle of the highway, at night. The driver had to finish it off because it was in the middle of nowhere. I'll never forget it :(

    Where do you live anyway?

  3. That must have been really frightening. Poor Roo, but glad your sissy is okay. Where Mum used to live there were lots of deer and in the rutting season huge stags would run across the road. Once Mum had one jump over the bonnet of her car... it was so lucky neither Mum, the car or the stag was hurt. Hope the repairs don't break the bank. Have a good weekend guys. Deccy x

  4. Well we don't have kanga's here but we do have alot of deer with very similar stories...now is the season until early spring that it happens everyday...dad gets pretty nervous driving home from work at night cos the little deer like to jump out of the cornfields and scare him...sometimes he turns into the mightly hunter and pays them back..mom gets sad...
We are all so glad your girl is fine! Give her extra hugs and kisses from you today.

  9. We are so happy that your sister is OK. Mom must have been so worried about her. We have that problem here with the deer. They seem to enjoy darting in and out of the car beams.

Hope your weekend is calm and enjoyable.

  11. Like many of the other commenters....I have to worry about hitting a deer, which is especially scary when we are riding the motorcycle.

So glad your sissy is OK and sad for the Roo.

  12. We are most happy that your Sissy is OK, and damage to car doesn't seem to be too bad. Like many of your other writers, we have deer that are up and down the highways and country roads, they are everywhere! You have to watch carefully, just like you do for 'Roos. I have never hit a deer but I have come THAT close.

    Cheers and hugs,
    Jo

  13. I'm so glad your Sissy is OK. I know how your Momma felt, because, remember, my daughter (now a nurse) was hit by a truck last October. A truck does much more damage than a Roo, and we couldn't salvage her car. Around here, people hit deer, which are about the same size as your roos, all the time, and they can get their car damage fixed easily. It's what happens when wildlife and humans intersect!

And if we see any Roos here in Pennsylvania, we'll call you guys to come fetch them!

Have a nice, and safe, weekend!

    xoxo Marjie

  14. Your sister was VERY lucky! We're glad she wasn't seriously injured. SHE's been very lucky never to have hit one...actually, SHE rarely sees them except as roadkill.

We hope you've planned a great Father's Day for your dad. Maybe a sausage sizzle where the sausages fall on the ground?

  15. I'm glad your sissy is OK - it would be very traumatic hitting a kangaroo, especially as they always seen to be such fast and unprecitable creatures.

We are sending Laura lots of love and some gentle woofs from NZ,

  16. SO HAPPY your Sissy is OK. It's always a threat on our open roads - the possibility of roos coming out of nowhere at those dangerous times of day. Many years ago I stopped and checked what looked like road-kill to find the mum was dead but the joey was very much alive. I took him home reared him, and made arrangements with the ranger at a National Park to take him. A Happy ever after story.

  24. It is awful to hit an animal, but sometimes it cannot be helped. I am glad your sissy is physically OK, but I am sure the image of the roo will be with her for a while. Hopefully he passed over the bridge swiftly.

  32. Hi y'all :)
Glad your sissy is okey dokey.
That was not me. Must have been an imposter. ;) Bummer the kangaroo did not jump higher over the car for all's sake.
Mom's had similar scary situations when she goes to California or South Carolina with deer. Best not to drive at dawn or dusk she says :)

    Waggin at ya,
Roo (the one and only ;)
