Another Day at Dog School

Howdy Everybuddy

After mum was hypnotised by Otto we headed off to Dog School.  We love it and mum and dad are doing really well with their training.  Sometimes mum can be a bit slow but she's a pretty old girl so we have to give her some encouragement.

It was cold with a little sun.  We are both in Grade 6 now, the top level, and the next thing we can do is Trials.  We're not sure if we will continue with that or not.

Here we are sitting on the plank.  Luckily not walking the plank!

The obligatory sit, stay and more photos!

The tunnels of fun.

More sit, stay action shots.
C'mon mum, there's gotta be more than this to take photos of.

Now mum tries to be real sneaky and take our photos while doing a three minute drop stay.
I, Stella, had to run towards her to make sure she wasn't stealing all the treats out of our backpack.
Dad (who helps me with school) gave mum the stink eye hehehe.

Back in position, and our folks come back to us.
Geez, they are good.  We don't even have to call out "Hey Dad, get back here".  They just come when we blink at them, hehe.
Surprise, surprise, another sit, stay photo.
Mum is just so darn creative isn't she.

Well that's it folks.
Hope your weekend has been good.
No worries, and LOVE,
Stella and Rory

P.S.  From mum.  Although the dogs are doing well at school, Rory still gets excited when we meet other dogs and can be a boofhead with pulling etc. especially when we see other dogs out walking.  If they are on the other side of the road, he's fine, just if we have to walk past each other on the same footpath.  (Any suggestions gratefully accepted).  Not usually aggressive but just big and excitable.

In class he is great and ignores the other dogs even when we are doing very close work.  Today another dog at school 'had a go' at Stella during class (some growling/barking and lunging for no reason apparently).  Rory thought he would back her up, (he is very protective of her) BUTT, I managed to keep him under control and was very pleased with myself and they both settled within seconds and were back to lessons.  He's a big boy now but apart from occasional lapses when we meet new dogs, he is an absolute breeze to walk, loves people and I'm very proud of his achievements.  Stella has sailed through from the start as she is totally food oriented.  We are happy with their progress and they love school and we enjoy it too.  They aren't perfect, but they are perfect to us!

After learning about dear Benny's illness, it makes me appreciate every day with our two characters.  Take care everyone.  Give your dogs/cats/pets an extra cuddle today.

Carol

  1. We've been getting some extra cuddles with all the Blogville animals that have health issues.

Well done at school. We're sort of in the 35-40 second sit and stay IF there's a treat involved. Roxy's nickname is Boofhead. Maybe she should meet Rory.

  4. That must be a nice school - is it like "Dogwarts"? I'm only sometimes excited when we meet other dogs - the staff thinks it's randomly but I have my strict rule which I don't tell to my staff. Have a sunny sunday

  7. Grade 6 is HARD. You two are SUPER STUDENTS. AND Bravo fur how well trained you have your mum and dad. It is NOT easy to get them to come back with JUST A BLINK. Maybe Otto's Hypnotism helped a bit with that also.
WE are very much PROUD of the two of you and how well your studies have gone. WE think that you are Both ABSOLUTELY PERFECT.
Now about that other thingy... when you are out walking it is like RECESS time... and RECESS Rules are Different from Classroom rules. We see NO reason why you can't have some FUN now and then. Just Sayin, Rory Buddy.

All the sit shots are to prove it wasn't a fluke I s'pect!!! Very well done to the whole team regardless of leg-count.

"MUM" - when Jade took to doing this, I enforced the sit-stay until other dogs had passed. Worked 99% of the time - much depended on the incoming animal.

As an observation, one thing I noticed was that if off lead, she didn't do the barging in or the boisterous thing - so whilst it may be politically incorrect, the other thing I would do was wrap her lead under her collar (in a manner whereby it could be grabbed if required) and enforced the 'stay by' command. Worked a treat and sure impressed the neighbours!! Not advocating that for every dog - but it is an interesting fact that, left to their natural devices, there's rarely any trouble.

That's an offering to your plea at least... good wishes for continued joy and company of your gorgeous companions! YAM-aunty xxx

  9. Our Mom is a bit 'thick' too. We've been doing dog classes for YEARS and she still hasn't quite 'got it'. But we keep going in the hopes that Mom will eventually learn! When we are in Our Neighborhood, walking Our Streets, we sometimes get a little excited when we see other dogs. Mom always carries some treats (dried lamb lung because we like it and it doesn't get icky in her pocket) and makes us sit and distracts us with treats while the interlopers, erm, other dogs go by. Which is fine with us, as we like treats, and Mom doesn't get all angsty.

  10. Don't give up on your mom. She might be slow but if you give her extra treats she will eventually get it.

  14. Hi Stella, Rory, and Mom!
When wesa went to puppy school...part of our learning involved a sit stay with other people and their doggies. If wesa did goods, wesa got a lot of praise and sometimes treats. Try that.

  15. Great post, love the pups' point of view.

We have trouble with that too, but they say to have high power treats in your pocket and teach the dogs the "watch me" command and reward with the treats when a dog is walking by. We usually cross to the other side of the street and Mom just says leave it. The worst part is when another dog is off leash:(

  18. Hey, Rory, it's great that Mum is doing so well at school. But no wisecracks about her age, please, because we ladies of a certain age don't take well to that kind of thing! It's wonderful that you protected Stella when the mean doggie tried to scare her, Rory; you are a magnificent brother. And I'm happy that you're still enjoying school, even if Mum and Dad seem hard to train sometimes.

Oh, and we Mums thing your "sit" pictures are really cute, even if you think they're boring.

  22. Sounds like honor students to me!
Mom says that she had to call in a K-9 psychiatrist to help with walking. After an hour with him (Mom took 2 hours!), I am a good walker. I too get excited when I see people walking with their 4 legged babies...so my mom made me sit and down until they passed...and I would get a reward. Now, when I see them coming, I just get into my down position. Keep up the good work!

  23. Wow you guys will be the instructor's favorite students. I'm pretty mellow and like most dogs I meet although there are some that cause me to lunge a little bit. It's okay, my dad's pretty potective anyhow.

  24. Blueberry tries to sniff other dogs when they are walking near - the only thing I find that works really is if I have her sit and we stand to the side to let the other dog pass. She's not real excitable - just curious.

Good job on the human training! ;)

  25. I give you all an A+ for the life of me I cannot get mom to sit still do you have any helpful hints?

  26. Hey Guys,

Sounds like the training of your humans is going super well! Keep up the great work!

I used to pull when I was a pup and Mum really liked it when she started to use a front clip harness on me, I still use them now and walk like a dream (even if I say so myself!) :)

    Have fun,

    Your pal Snoopy :)
