Rory Vs The Cone of Shame

After three nights wearing The Cone of Shame.

The Cone of Shame  -  2

Rory  -  1

On the second night, Rory managed to chew off his bandage even with the Cone of Shame on.  Mum said he is a rubber neck with legs that are way too long.  Rory's bandaged leg now smells like Vicks VapoRub.
Mum rubbed some all around the outside of the bandaging, with another bandage covering this.  Last night.... no chewing.

We are going good here mates.  Rory's wound while still looking horrible, does not smell, so antibiotics are working well.
We had to take the Cone of Shame off during the day cause mum's midriff was criss crossed with lines from the Cone and you could have played noughts and crosses on her, hehe.  Rory likes to rub his head on mums middle and was head butting mum all the time (but not in a mean or naughty way, just in an ear rub kind of way).

He is watched like a HAWK and in the day has been a very good boy.  THANKS EVERYBUDDY for your Kind wishes.  We love you all to bits and pieces.
No worries, and love, Stella and slobbers, Rory

P.S.  from mum.  When Rory originally chewed his foot for the second time, he was wearing his boot and actually chew through his boot and two bandages underneath that.  We are checking out more options for footwear for him.  Also to Riley's mum, thanks for the suggestion of a muzzle.  It was something we had not thought of and would be easier than the Cone of Shame.  It's just a matter of finding one big enough and comfortable enough for him at night.  Your support has helped me immensely dear friends :-)

  1. Cone of Shame 2 RORY 1... that sounds about right... can't have anybuddy thinkin they have you SKUNKED as they say on UP HERE.
Now that Vicks Vapo Rub stuffs... would keep Flies off a Ripe Road Kill. We give THAT one a score of Mom 1 Rory... None. As in..... Rory is havin NONE of that stuffs.
(Maybe when your mum isn't lookin you could switch that jar fur a jar of VEGEMITE. Just sayin.)
Since next Friday is Ranger's Blame it On Somebuddy ELSE day... you could try puttin the blame fur chewing on your foot pawtector stuffs.... on a passing Platypus. THAT would work GRRRRREAT if you ask US. OR on a Rampaging RABBIT.... you all have LOTS of those Down Under. THEY are furst cussins to SQUIRRELS you know.
We hope your pressie package hurries up and arrives.

  2. Oh man, poor Rory - I'm sure he doesn't understand. One thing to be sure of with a muzzle is that it has lots of openings so that, if he vomited, it could go through (and he wouldn't inhale it). There are muzzles like that, called "basket muzzles".

Hang in there, all of you. Good health vibes to Rory!

  3. One blogger's vet suggested putting mouthwash on areas you don't want to be licked. It works for their pack!

I also was able to maneuver a way to lick my thigh, even with my 'no bite' neck brace on! Silly peeps just don't understand how 'bend-y' we can be!! hehehe
I can't believes you chewed through the bootie!! OMD! that is one determined Rory! I thinks your Moms was smart thinkin' of the VapoRub! Ma tried something call Bitter Apple, butts I just licked it off!

  7. It is great to know the cone is winning two out of three times, and the Vick's works. The kennels Riley goes to uses "Australian stinky stuff!" around hot spots (also known as Tea tree oil) to deter licking - but Google this before you try (fi you ever need a change from Vicks) as there are mixed opinions about if Tea tree oil is safe for dogs or not.

Any muzzle I was thinking of (only for the times you can't watch him) was a "number 8 wire" version (light, lots of airflow, able to drink water in a bowl with it on, etc) like greyhounds wear, not a heavier one. I figure greyhounds have long necks and good noses like Rory does, so maybe it may be easier for him to wear than the massive cone if you can find one that is comfortable that contains his tongue :)

  8. Hi, thank goodness your mum's a bright lady. Vick's Vaporub...yum. We found a site that might have a super-sized one for Rory http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=676 or try http://www.chewy.com/dog/four-paws-quick-fit-muzzle/dp/50268

  9. We should have thought of the Vicks. Our house smells like Tea Tree Oil and/or Eucalyptus. Everytime Dui finds something to chew like rugs...baskets...wooden knobs, out comes the smelly stuff. So far it has worked!

  10. Oh poor Rory, there must be a solution to stop him chewing his foot. A soft muzzle sounds ideal if Mum can source one.
I still maintain his cone of shame receives satellite signals and he can here all of Blogville yelling at him!

  12. Poor Big R. A muzzle sounds a good idea as the cone of shame must get quite a battering as does mum LOL. Sending the usual healing vibes and POTP and we hope you find a good solution. Have a marvellous Monday.
    Best wishes Molly

OMD Rory, maybe you need a version of army boot! You are a worry...let it heal mate! Take care and give mum an extra big hug for all her love and care - then licks for Stella for being a patient sisdog. Hugs & wags, YAM-aunty xxx

  15. Respect, Rory. To chew up a bandage while wearing a cone is not easy., not even for a guy named Easy. But I managed that too ( because of my long legs) and they bought me a different cone what looks like a satellite-dish. I couldn't chew on my foot and I wasn't able to fit through a door. Let it heal for a while buddy, that's the best.

Now Rory Isa just thinks you need me to come down and sit wif you for awhile, I will discuss this wif my mom tonight to see if it is possible to get a train ticket purchased this week, the onliest fing is I is still a little guy and may haf to bring a road crew boy wif me to fight off the girls...does your momma haf enough room for two extra boys.

  17. Hi Stella and Rory, I'm sorry that Rory has to wear the cone, but a mum must do what a mum must do to help her babies get better. I wonder why Rory was chewing his foot-I'll have to go back to earlier posts and see if I can find out. Stella, you must tell Rory to stop it so you can play and be closer.

  18. If only Rory could understand. We hope the muzzle will work. There are those other things that inflate and fit around the neck and are supposed to be more comfortable but as long as his legs are they might be useless.

    Murphy & Stanley

  19. I do hope Rory's foot heals up well, and that you find a way to keep him from chewing on it. Poor baby! I hope Stella is taking up plenty of Mum snuggle time as well!

  22. Eeek - not the cone of shame!

I hated using the cone of shame for my last two dogs so I used to put either t-shirts or wraps or socks on them as needed. You'd think they would have come up with a better contraption than the cone of shame by now! Hang in there - hopefully Rory's wound heals soon. :)
