Howdy Mates

Howdy Mates.  I'm here to let you know how my little brother Rory is going.  He's been trying to walk again butt it is so difficult for him and he doesn't know why his legs are all wonky.  I know I always say he's a real wimpy guts but this time I am SO PROUD of him.

He NEVER complains.  He ALWAYS tries to help mum and dad when they walk him and even though his poor foot drags along and gets sore, he NEVER gets grumpy.  Please don't worry though, mum puts a boot on his foot she made herself!  GASP!!  I know.  She's never sewn anything that has EVER stayed together butt she made a soft shoe sort of thingy for Rory's foot and it worked!  Now he drags his foot butt it is protected and his sores are starting to heal.  Mum puts cream on them every time he comes inside after a walk.

Rory, mate, don't lick off your cream.

Over the last few days, Rory can now stand unaided while he has a drink.  We stand alongside him with his towel under his belly in case he feels wobbly.  He can bear some weight on his right back leg and rests his dodgy left back leg on the ground.

He uses his right back leg most of the time when he walks but it isn't 100% strong and we still support his weight.  He is swinging his left back leg forward in a walking motion at times.  We get really excited and cheer him on.

Sometimes Rory chases rabbits in his sleep and runs with both back legs!!  Yay!  It gives us hope and gives him some exercise too!

I just want my brother to get well.  I know it will take time.  He has come a long way over the last 11 days.  See ya soon mates.

Here's a photo of mum's arm now, hehehehe.

Take care mates.
No worries, and love, Stella and Rory

  3. Go Rory - one step at a time!

I think your mum is amazing supporting Rory's weight. My mum (who couldn't even lift a golden retriever) has been wondering if there was something around home you could use to help support his weight to help your mum out when she is by herself and she thought maybe an desk chair on castors (lowered to his belly height, and perhaps the back removed), that she could slide in or out as needed, might help her to support Rory temporarily until he gets his strength back. All depends how far apart his paws are.

Anyway Enzo and I are so glad to read that Rory is getting better.

    Love and woofs,
    Riley

Sounds good for Rory, I love it that he is running in his dreams. What does your vet say about Water Therapy? When does he go back to see the Vet?

  22. Sounds like a bit more improvement. We too wondered if Rory would benefit from water therapy, but it isn't always easy to find a location that offers it. Paws continue to be crossed and lots of prayers from Mom.

  25. I'm so sorry we're so late to visit - we've been touching base on FB but just hadn't managed to pop over here yet - anyway, I wanted to say how happy we are to hear about Rory's improvement. He really is such a wonderful, brave boy. And you & the whole family too for helping him along so much, I was so impressed by your sewing him a boot since I - like you - can't even sew a button on straight!

It all sounds really promising, especially with Rory being able to stand by himself when drinking water,. Baby steps, I'm keeping everything crossed for him, He has the advantage of youth so hopefully, he will continue to heal & recover.

I can really relate with the back leg weakness situation because we're going through a similar thing with Honey now, although for a different reason. She's losing strength & coordination due to arthritis & muscle wastage from age and the lack of activity recently has really been a disaster in that area - but, like you, we're happy for the small things - such as her running in he sleep also - as a way to exercise those back legs! ;-)

You've probably thought of this but if you have access to hydrotherapy near you and your vet is happy for you to do it, it might be really worth trying. I felt it was a huge help in maintaining Honey's strength & muscle tone - but with no impact or weight-bearing at all. Since Rory's problem is putting weight on his back legs, moving them through warm water might be very helpful to slowly building his strength back. I would still be doing it with Honey now if it weren't for her heart - as swimming is too strenuous for her now - but with Rory being a young dog, you shouldn't have that issue. So I really recommend trying it if you have it available.

Good luck with everything and we'll be keeping you in our thoughts!

    1. We're happy to read about Rory making progress and keep our fingers and paws crossed that he will continue to get better!
The advice Hsin-Yi gave about the swimming/hydrotherapy isn't a bad idea actually. It would help making the muscles in his legs stronger without him actually having to put any weight on them.
A friend of ours did hydrotherapy with her Great Dane after a knee operation and it really helped to get her dog back on his feet.

Best of luck and we hope to read more good news in any following blog entries!
